A weekend in Bruges

Two days in Bruges: what you really must see, how to avoid the crowds and where to get a quiet night’s sleep. Written by us: we live a quarter of an hour from the Market Square.

What to do on a weekend in Bruges

Bruges is small: you can walk around the old town in half a day. That leaves Sunday free for the Tillegem woods behind our holiday home or the beach at De Haan. These are the days out our guests choose most often.

Our tips for a weekend in Bruges

  • Leave the car outside the centre

Park at the Centrum-Station or ’t Zand car park and walk into town. The centre is largely car-free and street parking is expensive.

  • Go early, or late

On Saturdays it’s busy around the Market Square between eleven and four. After five the day-trippers have gone and it’s quiet along the canals.

  • When it rains

When it rains we head to the Groeninge Museum or St John’s Hospital, and at De Halve Maan you can sit in the dry with a Brugse Zot after the brewery tour.

  • With children

A boat trip on the canals takes half an hour, just long enough. Boudewijn Seapark is 3 km from our house and the beach at De Haan is a quarter of an hour’s drive.

  • In winter

From late November to early January the Christmas market fills the Market Square and Simon Stevinplein. Those weekends book up fast, at our place too.

  • Ghent or Bruges

You can walk around Bruges in half a day; Ghent is bigger and needs a full day. Both are on the E40, with Ghent about 25 minutes’ drive away. If you’re staying two nights, do Bruges on Saturday and Ghent or the coast on Sunday.

What does a weekend in Bruges cost?

A hotel room in the centre easily costs €155 to €215 a night on a Saturday, and with a family you often need two. For days out, food and parking, count on about €100 per person.

We rent out our holiday home Den Eenink 5 km from the centre, close to the peaceful Tillegem woods. You have the whole house to yourselves, with a kitchen, garden and a free parking space. A two-night weekend costs €720 in high season, however many of you there are, and from €504 in low season.
